The Warnie Award Winner: PyroManiac

June 10th, 2005

If you are not familiar with the Warnie Award, it is an award given by Adrian Warnock to a blog that he considers destined for blogdom “prominence” :-). The recipient of the latest Warnia Award? PyroManiac, the blog of Phil Johnson. Do I believe Phil is destined for blogdom “supremacy”? :-) Absolutely. My first introduction to Phil Johnson in blogdom (I’ve been aware of Phil’s Bookmarks for some 6-8 years) was on Sharper Iron where he received no small amount of attention. So take a look at his blog. He will not bore you.

    Dan,
I don’t want to pick on you in particular, but I find that since Adrian has given out his award to Phil recently, many, many people started boasting of how awesome this Phil is. You used the words prominence and supremacy and other bloggers used their colorful adjectives to describe him as well. I find this kinda odd in light of what Apostle Paul says to the Corinthains in Volume 1 Chapter 3 verses 4-9, 21-23, Chapter 4 verses 1-2.

For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future–all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

    Paul

    Paul,

My post (particularly the use of the words “prominence” and “supremacy”) was meant to be taken in good fun. I was certainly not seeking to glorify any man or his blog over Christ. I’ve added quotes and some smilie faces to hopefully make the “good fun” intention clear.

    Blessings,

I would also like to chime in here and say that Scripture also speaks of giving credit where credit is due (”Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” Romans 13:7). There was nothing wrong in what has been said.

  4. Paul Schafer Says:

    Dan,
I think Christians, me included, can get goofy and start puffing up people and making them “saints” in a Catholic way. Next, we probably go make a trinket idol of Phil and pray to it saying, “Holy Bubba, cure my ills.” Oh well…..

  5. Paul Schafer Says:

    Dave,

Our we giving respect and honor to Phil for all his works he done? Or our we giving respect and honor to Phil for him being humble and obediant to the Lord and His word? Or our we giving respect and honor to Phil cause he has a charismatic personality which draws people to himself, a certain aire of pride and arrogance that our flesh is attracted too?

  6. dan Says:

I’d rather buy a book written by Phil Johnson (you know the kind with his name in big letters on the front :-)) than a trinket idol of him. Kidding aside…I agree with you, Paul, we Christians are a messed up bunch. It seems to me that we are perfect candidates for more grace :-).

    Chiefly messed up,

Wow, I did not intend for this post to be this provocative or to be taken this seriously! It just seemed to me that the word “Warnie” was never meant to be taken completely seriously. Oh well… Let’s call it quits on this one :-).

  8. Paul Schafer Says:

    Dan,

Ahh man, call it quits? This is a learning experience for me and possibly for you and your brother. I find hero worship a prevelant syndrome in the body of Christ. Possibly due to the influence of great heros or superhero movies that came about the last five years.
Or maybe we havent been preached or taught enough about how to understand the clergy/laity relationship? Over here at my church, Living Hope, alot of our college students are Piperites. They gobble up everything that John Piper has wrote. They eat, sleep and spit Piper. But we do not have many Bereans though. Would not there be a danger of making too much of a person, placing them on a pedastal?

  9. dan Says:

You said, “Would not there be a danger of making too much of a person, placing them on a pedastal?”

My answer: Yes, absolutely. Well taken.

It’s been done already. It’s actually a Bobble-Head doll sort-of deal, with adhesive on the bottom, so that you can attach it to your dashboard. I’m amazed that Paul heard of it already. It wasn’t due for release to the general public until the big announcement is made next Tuesday at PyroManiac. But now that Paul’s spilled the beans, let me just say that they are $19.95, with all proceeds going to my favorite charity, the Make-Phil-Rich foundation.

  11. Big Chris Says:

I’ll take two Phil. One for my desk, and one for my truck.

    Big Chris
    Because I said so

  12. Big Chris Says:

Also, if you are offering these, will they have a flame option? Can we get a butane refillable type?

Ok, Now I’m getting carried a way.

    Big Chris
    Because I said so

  13. Rob Wilkerson Says:

I wont one fer the gunrack on the back of my motorsickle!

  14. Paul Schafer Says:

    Rob,
Your kids would take it off and play with it.
Besides, it would look better on the dashboard of your white mini-van,
    next to the hula-skirt girl.

[[ It just seemed to me that the word “Warnie” was never meant to be taken completely seriously. ]]

dan, i’m disappointed. surely you knew that “Warnie” was the nickname by which C.S. Lewis called his brother. therefore, it is a name to be revered.

  16. dan Says:

    Joy,

I gladly repent in sackcloth and ashes! Consider it a lesson learned :-)
